What is ChatGPT Enterprise?
Hard to address Privacy and security worries perfectly for B2B and Enterprise adoption.
Friends,
Even as the viral quality of ChatGPT faded in the summer weeks of 2023, ChatGPT was busy trying to find more product-market fit.
On August 28th, they released ChatGPT Enterprise. Even as Sam Altman’s World Coin project appears to be in a downward spiral, the same cannot be said for OpenAI, the best funded Generative A.I. startup in the world we know of today. OpenAI has raised $11.3 Billion publically, likely a lot more.
Enterprise Benefits
ChatGPT Enterprise, which offers enterprise-grade security and privacy, unlimited higher-speed GPT-4 access, longer context windows for processing longer inputs, advanced data analysis capabilities, customization options, and much more.
OpenAI believes AI can assist and elevate every aspect of our working lives and make teams more creative and productive. Yesterday marked yet another step towards an AI assistant for work that helps with any task, is customized for your organization, and that protects your company data.
So far, the overwhelming share of revenue that OpenAI generates comes from the licensing fees it charges those using its models or products. ChatGPT and GPT-4 are alive and well in a lot of products around the world in just the last few months. The public also pay for ChatGPT Plus, which is a paid subscription of $20/month.
Now of course the majority of OpenAI’s revenue is going to come from B2B enterprises and firms. Even as the majority of its profits go back to Microsoft in their peculiar funding arrangement. Microsoft will reportedly get a 75% share of OpenAI's profits until it makes back the money on its investment, after which the company would assume a 49% stake in OpenAI.
Oddly enough, Microsoft and OpenAI have competing products, which has confused the general public and likely caused some tension in their relationship or partnership.
Addressing Major Roadblocks to Corporate Adoption
OpenAI finally released a version of ChatGPT that promises to protect business data as more companies consider using the platform but worry about privacy and security. For some reason at the beginning they did not have enough privacy and cybersecurity protections in place.
These fears of the corporate world were very justified too. Privacy and security have been a concern for businesses who fear their data could be used to train ChatGPT and are worried that using the tool might accidentally expose sensitive customer information to AI models.
An Exclusive Business Tier
ChatGPT Enterprise, the AI chatbot’s business tier is a major product announcement coming roughly 9 months after ChatGPT for the general public.
OpenAI said users of ChatGPT Enterprise will have control and ownership over their data, which will not be used to train GPT at all.
To give you an idea of how Microsoft and OpenAI are weirdly in antagonistic competition - ChatGPT Enterprise is on paper basically on par, feature-wise, with Bing Chat Enterprise, Microsoft’s recently launched take on an enterprise-oriented chatbot service.
OpenAI likely had to delay their own Enterprise tier until Microsoft got all of its various features and products out there, which is now very confusing with all of these new subscriptions.
Suffice to say that this isn’t the end, it’s only the beginning. Other features like customizing ChatGPT’s knowledge of company data and even more advanced analytical tools will come soon.
ChatGPT Enterprise is like paying more for more new features, and new ones on the way.
While OpenAI has been with ChatGPT in the front seat of Generative A.I. fandom, it’s not clear if its first mover advantage will be considerable or not in a few years time.
OpenAI claims that with ChatGPT launch just nine months ago, they’ve seen teams adopt it in over 80% of Fortune 500 companies. While many organizations have been building generative AI tools using OpenAI and GPT-4, but many choose to connect to GPT-4 via API or cloud services. Open-Source DIY options are more secure for companies who need to tailor it to their proprietary data.
Some companies began to create their own large language model-type systems to protect their data from the more extensive training dataset of GPT, but this can be unwieldy for smaller firms. It’s not thus so entirely clear who are ChatGPT Enterprise’s best prospect target customers.
More - Faster - Better
ChatGPT Enterprise includes access to GPT-4 with no usage caps, as well as performance up to two times faster than previous versions and API credits.
include 32k context in Enterprise, allowing users to process four times longer inputs or files. ChatGPT Enterprise also provides unlimited access to advanced data analysis, previously known as Code Interpreter. Did they already change the name?
Pricing details were not made available in late August, 2023. They said “it will depend, for us, on every company’s use cases and size.” Beta users included Block, Canva and The Estée Lauder Cos.
While OpenAI two months after ChatGPT’s launch in November surpassed 100 million monthly active users, breaking records for the fastest-growing consumer application in history - it has not all been smooth sailing since. Users began to seriously drop off around May or June, 2023.
