When a four week old startup raised $113 million, eyebrows went up. It was June, 2023, at the height of peak interest in Generative A.I. opportunities. With the success of Hugging Face, and the Open-source potential of the space exploding, Mistral is a fascinating startup.

The Paris based startup co-founded by alums from Google’s DeepMind and Meta and are focusing on open source solutions and targeting enterprises to create what CEO Arthur Mensch believes is currently the biggest challenge in the field: “To make AI useful.” It plans to release its first models for text-based generative AI in 2024.

Mistral AI, the six-month-old Paris-based startup that made headlines with its unique Word Art logo and a record-setting $118 million seed round — reportedly the largest seed in the history of Europe — yesterday released its first large language AI model, Mistral 7B.
