What is Sanctuary AI's Robot?
Phoenix, Carbon and the future of General Purpose Robotics (GPRs)
Hey Everyone,
I’m following robotics at the intersection of innovation, so there was an important announcement recently.
Phoenix is the first humanoid to be powered by Carbon, a pioneering AI control system, and represents a giant leap forward in our mission to create the world’s first human-like intelligence in general-purpose robots.
At a certain point LLMs inside the software of robots becomes really interesting, we are approaching that day.
The idea that general purpose humanoid robots won’t be useful anytime soon is in my opinion, false. Like LLMs these are in stealth mode and learning fast. This also has to do with the open-source community around Meta AI and Google.
Who are Sanctuary AI?
The Vancouver, British Columbia, firm just unveiled Phoenix, its own stab at the form factor. The bipedal robot stands 5’7″ and weighs 155 pounds — not dissimilar from the humans it plans to augment (or replace, depending on who you ask). The system is capable of lifting payloads up to 55 pounds and traveling up three miles an hour.
What you have to realize is that it’s not just Tesla aiming for genreal purpose robots, there’s a lot of pure play startups here. Sanctuary Cognitive Systems Corp., better known as Sanctuary AI, has unveiled an incredibly humanlike and supposedly very capable general purpose robot called Phoenix that’s being billed as the first robot worker prototype.
A lot of new jobs will be created from the Machine Economy proper.
It was not long ago I was writing about another startup in this domain:
The CEO of Sanctuary A.I. is Geordie Rose, and they have been working on this for over five years.
Ameca from Engineered Arts, is yet another recognizeable GPHR, or general purpose humanoid robot.
Is human civilization going to get to the HER movie (2013) or Ex Machina movie (2014) first? It’s an open debate.
Both movies should be cult classics if you think LLMs and Robotics are going to change the world in the next twenty years. But seriously, the way they interact is part of how a convergence takes place in the Machine Economy. Both Generative A.I. and robotics can create a lot of jobs, that eventually displace other jobs.
